What a busy time we are having at the club! It's great to see most of the membership now fully out of winter hibernation (it is officially summer now!), the events have kicked off, our new members are integrated into the club and participation numbers are up. I feel a real positive buzz around the place right now and it seems to be rubbing off on everyone. Being Scottish, we sometimes let ourselves down and focus on the negatives, whatever is different here at SGC, let’s all keep it going!

Junior golf These last few weeks, I have noticed a significant spike in our Junior golf participation, both from the members here at the club and the members of our Kids At the Castle development programme. Our Junior members enjoyed 10 hours of free Junior coaching over the Easter holidays which seems to have sparked some interest. The more advanced children from our Kids At The Castle programme have now also started to filter through into membership and actively participating in our Junior on-course medals. I’m really proud of this and glad to see that the wheels are most definitely in motion. Myself and Scott are due to launch the second term of our Kids At The Castle programme shortly, please keep your eyes peeled for more information shortly. |
The Masters Sweepstake winner This year’s Masters winner was of course Tiger Woods, more importantly though the winner of the Pro Shop Masters Sweepstake was SGC member Grant Cook. Last week I managed to get the chance to spend some time with Grant and go through a comprehensive driver fitting and offer some advice - all part of his winning prize! Grant is a very good golfer and keen to improve, he struggles a little with excessive spin that is generated through his technique and his older (not fitted) driver. The beauty of club fitting is that everyone is a little different, it is our job to use our expertise and experience to make each player improve in those all important gain and accuracy categories.

Pictured is Grant collecting a low spinning (Callaway Sub Zero) driver (I know we advertised a PING G410 but for this example Grant was keen to "get whatever works best") to get his spin numbers down. Thankfully after an hour or so we managed to get an increase in ball speed, a decrease in launch angle and a decrease in his excessive spin rate, totalling out at a whopping 20 yards AVERAGE distance gain. The offerings we have here in our indoor studio cannot be beaten in the local area, we are your Club Professional team and here to help your game get better. Feel free to get in touch by clicking here if you would like to learn more about our fitting process. |

Kenny hits the course On Monday I joined Club Captain Andy Malcolm, Garry Bowman (Club Secretary) and Willie Nicol (committee member) for a lovely trip to Blairgowrie (Rosemount). Most of you will know that Blairgowrie is one of the premier inland courses in the country, having held a number of national Amateur and professional events over the years. The purpose for the visit was to do some benchmarking, analyse the service culture and of course have some fun! We had set up a meeting with their Club Manager and Captain so we could all sit down and share some positive news from each club. |

Having worked in golf clubs for some time now, I feel it’s extremely important to continue sharing best practice. I hope to be at SGC for some considerable time and I love working alongside a team as desperate as me to keep this great club moving forward. As myself and Willie didn't manage a victory, the less said about the golf the better!

Ending next week! If you haven't already taken advantage of our Battery Trade-In, you don't have long left to do so. If your electric trolley battery is struggling to complete 18 holes or is not charging quite how it used to, consider upgrading to Lithium in 2019. Alternatively, if you don't know whether yours needs replacing, bring it in-store and we'll check it out for you. |

Preferred lies local rule has ended As we have now officially entered summer and the full playing season our preferred lies local rule has now ended. I want to remind everyone that golf balls must be played as it lies from now on - don't say I didn't tell you! |
Be honest, how much thought do you put into the golf ball that you play? Probably not as much you do your clubs but considering the ball is in play on every single shot, using any old thing that you find at the bottom of your bag could be leaving you paddling uphill. |
| Which Titleist ball to play? |
|
The first question to ask is: What do you want from your ball? Obviously, getting the thing in the hole in as few shots as possible is the ultimate goal, but there are many paths to getting there. There are balls that offer impressive distance, such as the Titleist Velocity, whilst others that provide incredible feel, such as DT TruSoft. But if you are looking for total performance without sacrificing on any one element, Titleist's Pro V1, Pro V1x and AVX balls are truly phenomenal. With subtle differences between each, this is where having a chat with a member of our PGA qualified team will have you leaving with the best ball for your game - what will yours be? |
