Welcome to this week's newsletter, bringing you all the latest news, events and offers from here at Stirling Golf Club. This week we turn our attention fully to Professional’s Day 2018, it’s also your last chance to grab a space for our Odyssey putter fitting weekend. The Motocaddy "FREE BAG" campaign is now into the later stages and congratulations to Team Stirling on a win in the Pro/Captain Scottish region qualifier.

Club news

Professional's Day 2018

We are bringing a brand-new event to the calendar this year in the form of Professionals Day on Saturday, 25 August.

For those of you that have never heard or played in a Professional's Day before, keep reading as you are in for a treat!

If you like having fun while competing, socialising both on and off the course and don't mind a few surprises on the course then this event is just for you.

The event is a fourball betterball competition and is open for all members at Stirling Golf Club. We invite you to enter in teams of two and you can even bring a guest along to join in on the fun.

Historically these days are one of the busiest in the social calendar and I hope to do make it a cracker. Here are a few bits of information for you all to consider;

Tee times available from 7:30am-3:30pm.
Fourball betterball format.
Registration must be made in the Professional Shop.
Drinks on course included.
Food in the clubhouse afterwards included.
Great team prizes to play for.
Lots of additional on course prizes.
Evening DJ and entertainment included for all golfers.
Members of SGC are invited to bring friends.
Golfers are also encouraged to bring partners along to the evening entertainment.
Official prize giving from 7:30pm approximately.
£15 entry fee per person.
£4 evening entry for those not playing in the event.

We have a few surprises planned for the day, I hope to make this one of the most sociable days of the SGC calendar going forward and I invite you all to come along and see what we have planned for you!

Registration is now open and all entries must be made directly through the Professional Team. Entry will only be confirmed when entry fee of £15 per person is paid. This event is not open on BRS and the tee sheet for Saturday, 25 August is closed.

Team Stirling hit the headlines

It’s not often these days i get to talk about my own golf, it’s even less often that I talk about much success on the course either...until now! On Tuesday Club Captain William McQuillian and myself went along to the Scottish Qualifier for the PGA SKYCADDIE PRO/CAPTAIN CHALLENGE at the nearby West Lothian Golf Club.

I met William nice and early for a bit of breakfast as we discussed our plan of attack for the day. "sorry, but I haven't been playing much William" and "I wish I played an additional Supplementary Medal to get up to 16.5 Kenny" probably didn't sound too confident in front of our playing partners, Airdrie duo and past champions Simon Mclean and Club Captain Brian Jamieson. However, things certainly changed for the better very quickly.

We were out of the traps fast with a quick four under par through four, some huge drives (William), a chip in later and a couple of longs putts (again from William!) we only managed to sneak a victory on the day. We will now go on to represent Stirling Golf Club in the Grand Final to be played at the beautiful Sheraton Arabella Golf Resort in Mallorca this November. A great end to my first season at Stirling Golf Club!

Groovy

When tour pros are playing in big events, like the PGA Championship this week, they’ll always have relatively new wedges in their bag to maximise their spin, because worn wedges mean less control.

Why do grooves matter?
The grooves are the sole contact point between your ball and the club, imparting backspin to help lift the ball into the air. R&D testing has revealed that after 125 rounds, wedges spin 2,000rpm less than wedges with new grooves and consequently roll 14 feet further on landing - which is huge.

What causes wear?
All grooves will wear slowly over time due to a number of factors, including gradual wear from play, but golf's equipment manufacturers work hard to limit this.

Need to upgrade?
Grooves are particularly important on wedges, where pinpoint control is crucial.
