Hello golfers,

This week we start of with some great news. The golf course was absolutely jammed packed at the weekend and the feedback was tremendous. Saturday was of course the annual Members' Silloth (Not the gents as per the typo last week, sorry ladies) we had a strong field on Saturday and the new format suited most. The prize table was filled to the brim and the scoring was incredible. Well done to Linlithgow member John Sinclair and his guest D. Lyons who won this year's Silloth. The clubhouse was busy all night with lots staying back for the prize giving, it was great to see so many getting involved on the day.

On Sunday we welcomed two different visiting parties as well as hosting the first ever Inter-club Cup Event with our other reciprocal clubs, Eastwood, Airdrie and Hayston. Myself and the council have been working away over the past nine months to bring more offers to the members of LGC and our new reciprocal agreement is a huge membership benefit offering FREE golf at three other clubs on various days of the week, another great reason to be a member at LGC. The Inter-club Cup was part of this agreement with members from each club competing for a brand new trophy donated on the day by the host Club Professionals. I am pleased to report that Captain Jim McFadyen led his team well to record a victory for the host club. Again the feedback on the day was fantastic, most visitors had never been to the club before but they found the condition, layout and hospitality first class (Although we thumped them).

Personally I played along with the three other Club Professionals where we shared ideas on how we can make this reciprocal agreement stronger going forward.

Don't put yourself at a disadvantage

We always encourage the golfers we teach to get out on the practice ground between lessons. It’s through this repetition that swing changes start to feel more natural so the pupil can then hit the course full of confidence. We love good habits like this, but there is one habit we see all the time that we certainly don’t recommend…

NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE?

It’s not uncommon for us to see members playing a scuffed ball, using it until it eventually gets lost. But ball damage, such as worn dimples or surface cuts, can alter the airflow over your ball, making your trajectory more erratic and causing wayward shots and shorter carries.

You might think this would have minimal effect versus and unblemished ball, but a mark across just a few dimples can make 10 yards difference to a shot, as we’ve demonstrated in the illustration here.

IT'S AN EASY CHOICE

You have the ability to ensure your ball is the same on every hole, which is why we recommend finding one you like and sticking to it to improve your consistency.

Which one are you?

So you find yourself on the course facing 172 yards left to the pin; how do you work out which club to use? There is one method that many turn to, but we hope you’re not one of them...

 

PLUS OR MINUS 10 YARDS

Do you know how far you hit each iron, or do you just add or subtract 10 yards per club from your 150 club to find the one you need?

We come across many amateurs who do this, but you’d be surprised how far out this method is when we bring those golfers in for a gapping session, which helps explain why they miss so many greens.
